Wesak Day

19 May 2019 - 19 May 2019

Themed “Harmonious Society through Tolerance and Understanding”, this year’s Wesak Day Celebration takes place on 29 May. Wesak Day is a special day for Buddhists around the world to honour the birth, enlightenment and passing of Buddha. In Malaysia, Wesak Day is considered one of the national public holidays.

Every year in Malaysia, thousands of devotees nationwide celebrate this colourful affair with an assortment of activities including bathing the Buddha statue at Buddhist temples, giving to charity, abstaining from meat through the consumption of vegetarian food, and meditating.

The key event on Wesak Day is the float procession organised by the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA). This grand procession is held in Penang. It starts at the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) in Burmah Road at 6 pm before passing through Pangkor Road, Kelawei Road, Burmah Lane, Peel Anenue, Macalister Road, Anson Road and Madras Lane before returning to MBA premises at around 10 pm.

Other activities lined up include a blood donation campaign, Dhamma talks and distribution of gifts and red packets to charitable organisations.
