Kuala Kubu Bharu

The peaceful, quaint town of Kuala Kubu Bharu with many shophouses, has a long history with tin mining activities dating back the 18th century. Kuala Kubu was said to be lying on the confluence of Selangor River tributaries (now known as Ampang Pecah) with a fortress built during Selangor civil war.

However, the catastrophic flood with dam burst in 1883 wiped out the entire town as well as killing many people including its District's Magistrate and Tax Collector Officer, Sir Cecil Ranking.

Local people attribute the calamity to Cecil’s shooting of a white crocodile, said to be the river guardian even though being told not to do so. It is said that one of the few relics that survived the flood is the mosque – Masjid Al Hidayah Ampang Pecah.

After the tragedy, the British government at that time decided to build a new town by moving Kuala Kubu Bharu to its present location on hilly terrain as the original area was prone to flooding. And now, visitors to Kuala Kubu Bharu may embark on its Heritage Trail including street arts.
