On June 1 every year the Dayak people in Sarawak who are traditionally farmers celebrate Gawai Dayak. It is a day to give thanks to the gods after the rice harvesting season is over. When all the paddy stalks have been neatly stored. Gawai means festival and Dayak is a collective name for the indigenous peoples of Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan and the interior of Borneo. Gawai Day is one of the celebrations that Sarawak Ian look forward to. This festival is a major festival that must be celebrate with great enthusiasm every year. This year Gembox@Nilai wants to celebrate together where The Largest Gawai Festival Celebration will take place on 23-25 June 2023 start form 5.00 pm – 12.00 mid night.
The objective of this celebration is to expose the public to the diversity of customs and culture through a celebration programme, fun stage performances, and interesting activities. In addition, to give exposure and experience to the public about traditional musical instruments, traditional clothes, longhouse decorations, and the traditional dances of Ngajat and Ajat, Bamboo Dance, and others, In addition, visitors and tourists can experience the deliciousness of traditional food, the beauty of traditional dances, and minority ethnic clothing, and most interestingly, they can give the Sarawakian people who do not have the chance to return to their villages the opportunity to celebrate Gawai Day together at Gembox@Nilai.
There a lot of activities during this Gawai celebration which is we will have tattoo booth, a spray painting workshop, a batik painting workshop, a Sape workshop plus exhibition and Sumpit workshop. This type of activities is related with Sarawak culture, traditional games and also traditional music instrument. This is what we can call more too experiential activites. In additional, there are also cultural performances. Among them are Ngajat Pua Kumbu, Ngajat Ritual, Rejang Be'uh, Kanjet Ngeleput, Alu-Alu, Datun Julud, and Bamboo dance. Visitors can dancing together plus can learn more about their cultural performance.
Besides that, Gembox@Nilai has organize three contest during this Gawai Festival Celebration. The first one is Ai Technology Gawai Festival Contest dan winner have a chance to win OPPO A98 smartphone.
